Senior Product Marketing Lead · Shopify

I’ve been in product for over 17 years and I love it! I’ve done everything from inspirational consumer brands like Nike and Abercrombie to tech innovators like Shopify. I love bringing new products to market and growing teams. Contributing to this community brings me joy.
  1. As a product marketer, how do you know if you're a better fit to be a product manager?

Here's the real talk: You're probably better suited for PM if you find yourself more energized by solving hard problems instead of inspiring users with great storytelling. Like, if you're in positioning meetings thinking "but WHY did we build it this way?" or you light up during technical discussions while GTM planning feels like a chore. The signs you might like being a PM? You read API docs for fun and you think in user flows and edge cases. You'd rather own one product deeply than market five ...Read More

  2. How do you ensure that PMM sits as a strategic partner to PM, rather than an administrative or subordinate function?

Ah, this is the eternal PMM struggle! I've seen so many product marketers feel like they're just the "launch checklist people" or the team that makes things sound pretty after all the real decisions are made. It's frustrating when you know you could add so much more value upstream. To position PMM as a strategic partner to PM: Get involved early - Join product planning from concept stage, not just at launch Own market intelligence - Bring unique customer insights, competitive analysis, and marke ...Read More

  3. What specific areas of roadmap influence do you think product marketing can help the most with?

Is it the decision of what features to actually build based on customer feedback and marketing opportunity OR more so naming, branding and how we position and target features?

Okay, real talk - this is THE question that determines whether PMMs feel like strategic partners or just the folks who execute launches, right? I've been in roles where PMs basically said "here's what we built, make it sound cool" and others where I was genuinely shaping what got built. The difference is night and day for job satisfaction. Here's where PMM influence is most powerful on roadmaps: 1. Market Timing & Sequencing "We need X feature to compete for enterprise deals next quarter" "B ...Read More

  4. Through the lens of a feature/product lifecycle, what are the critical points of collaboration between product marketing and product management? And what are the lines that distinguish who owns which part?

This is such a good question because honestly, the PM/PMM dance can get messy - especially when you're in the thick of a launch and everyone's stressed. I've been in those meetings where both sides are like "wait, I thought you were doing that part?" Let me break down how this typically works across the lifecycle: Discovery & Ideation PM owns: Problem definition, technical feasibility, user research PMM owns: Market opportunity sizing, competitive landscape, customer segmentation Collaborate ...Read More

  5. What does Product Management have to provide in their Project Briefs in order for Product Marketing to be successful?

Example: Project Briefs should include: problem, solution, etc.

Ugh, nothing worse than getting a project brief that's basically "we built this thing, make people want it, launch is next week, thanks!" I swear, half the time PMMs are playing detective just trying to figure out what the product actually does and why anyone should care. A good brief can be the difference between a killer launch and a frantic scramble. Here's what PMs need to include for PMMs to actually succeed: 1. The Problem Context What customer pain are we solving? Why does this problem ma ...Read More

  6. Who owns pricing - product management or product marketing? If product management, then what is product marketing's role?

Oh man, the pricing question! This is probably one of the biggest sources of confusion between PMs and PMMs. I've literally seen spreadsheet battles over who gets final say on pricing decisions. The best teams I've seen treat pricing as a joint strategic exercise where PMM is the chief advisor and PM is the final decision maker. Think of it like PMM is the CFO and PM is the CEO when it comes to pricing - you need both perspectives to get it right. PM Ownership of Pricing: Sets the actual price p ...Read More

  7. Who owns customer feedback in your organization, and does that ownership change across stages like design partners, beta, and full release?

Ooh, customer feedback ownership - this is where things get really spicy! I've been in so many orgs where customer feedback is like a hot potato that everyone wants credit for but nobody wants to actually organize. "Who's synthesizing all these Slack messages?" "Wait, why did no one tell me about that customer call?" Here's how feedback ownership typically flows: Design Stage PM owns: Direct partner relationships, feature requirement gathering, NDA management PMM owns: Partner selection criteria ...Read More
