  1. I feel like Product marketing is in a similar place where Product Management was 15-20 years ago. With that said, how do you see Product Marketing growing over the next 5 years?

    I think PMMs have "proven" their value as strategic leaders, so we are moving from more of a "launch factory" to strategic growth driver. Which you can see as more VP of PMM roles open up!One thing I do foresee [potentially] is PMM being held to revenue impact, like showing a direct line to review. Not sure I agree with it, but whether that’s through improved conversion rates, higher win rates, or faster time-to-value, i think the days of PMM being measured solely on asset delivery are ending.     GREAT question - for me, it was moving from an IC role into management. Even though I had led (small) teams previously, and was really strong as an IC, but it took me awhile to really understand that being a great individual contributor was only part of the story (the "instant" gratification I got from crushing it as an IC was hard to get away from) So I knew I needed to move from being the person who executed the work to the person who could shape the strategy.   3. How do you see the role of product marketing in-person versus fully remote ? What are the pros and cons?

    Product marketing is one of those roles that’s deeply collaborative. In-person, you get the benefit of hallway chats, spontaneous whiteboard sessions, and the kind of quick back-and-forth that can make things move faster. You also build trust and relationships in a way that sometimes just doesn’t happen on Zoom. On the flip side, working remotely gives you access to a bigger talent pool and flexibility that’s hard to beat.     I think LinkedIn is the easiest! You can add PDFs, videos, or links to launches, messaging frameworks, or sales enablement decks you’ve contributed to in the Featured Section. Canva is a hidden gem! Anna Startseva (PMM at ServiceNow) has a GREAT example of this: https://lnkd.in/e4ZixHaY Notion is a super-flexible platform that many PMMs use as a portfolio hub.     Product Marketing Alliance (PMA) Certifications PMA is the gold standard for PMM-specific training. They have TONS of options depending on your experience and where you want to focus (Core PMM, positioning and messaging, GTM, etc.) These courses are well-structured, offer tons of templates, and are highly recognized in the industry.     Moving from senior manager to director was a tricky move for me, but we got there! Some things that worked well for me: Share your goals early and often with your manager. I got my first Director role because I had told my manager that was my goal, and she helped me understand what I needed to do to get to that level.     Oh, this is a tricky one. Personally, Ive done sales, marketing, and then product marketing - and having that deep knowledge of other teams (how they work, what metrics they care about, what their challenges are, etc.) has definitely helped me in my career. but also..sometimes, someone else sees your next career move before you do. Like pay attention when someone says, “Hey, you’d be great at X.” They might be seeing a path you haven’t considered yet, and that might just be your ticket to the ex ...Read More

  8. For someone working in product marketing, what would you deem most valuable in terms of upskilling to reach the manager level?

    If I had to boil it down, I’d say the most valuable upskilling to reach the manager level in PMM is about: Building influence across functions - because of course! Learning to prioritize and coach (this also includes how to say "No"!) Try this: Shadow your manager when they’re making prioritization decisions, or ask to co-lead quarterly planning.   9. If you're a weak writer how do you overcome this? Especially since messaging and positioning is crucial in PMM?

    Not all PMMs are great writers (myself included!), so you are definitely not alone. A lot of PMMs come from technical, analytical, or project management backgrounds, and writing clear, compelling messaging can feel daunting at first. The key is to remember that writing isn’t just about natural talent, it’s about practice, frameworks, and feedback.IMO, messaging and positioning is more about getting into the minds of the customers, solving REAL problems, and explaining how your solution does this ...Read More

    For me, it starts with giving people real ownership. And assign them ownership of a key initiative. Let them run a launch from start to finish, have them lead a competitive deep dive and present it to sales and/or leadership, assign them to build a new sales enablement toolkit and run a training session, or own a messaging framework.     There's pros and cons to both.When it’s part of Marketing, PMM is often super connected to go-to-market execution and customer insights. But sometimes, it gets boxed into being “just the content team,” which is a missed opportunity.   13. For folks coming from unconventional backgrounds (e.g. government, academia, or niche industries), what’s the best way to signal 'I belong' in in fast-moving, private-sector product marketing roles?

    I’ve led product marketing efforts as a contractor in a non-traditional environment, driving positioning, launches, messaging, and cross-functional alignment. While my day-to-day responsibilities look identical to those of a PMM role, I didn’t follow a typical industry path, and that seems to make some hiring managers question the transferability of my experience. I’m hoping to learn how to better signal readiness for fast-paced, high-growth PMM roles in more traditional orgs.

    I love this question because some of the best PMMs I’ve worked with came from really interesting, non-traditional backgrounds. The key is to translate your experience into language that hiring managers in tech can understand. Instead of just listing your responsibilities, focus on outcomes. For example, don’t just say, “I led positioning,” say, “I developed positioning that helped increase conversion rates by X percent.” That shows you understand the business impact, which is what most hiring ma ...Read More
