The fastest way to level up is to get great at the tools that amplify core PMM work: sharp thinking, clear writing, and repeatable enablement. You do not need to become a part-time data scientist, like I thought I did early in career where I tried teaching myself SQL and then never used it :) You do need to know how to ask good questions, write compellingly, understand your business and industry, run tight processes, and ship assets that teams actually use. That said, tools that matter to me: Fo ...Read More

Lean in! Insights/research is an amazing advantage for PMM because it trains you to find truths that will bolster your marketing narratives. Your goal will be to prove that you can translate that research into GTM decisions and shipped assets. Where your background could map directly to PMM (look for these opportunities now in your current role!) Messaging: find opportunities to turn customer or market inputs into crisp narratives and value props alongside your current PMM partners. Roadmap infl ...Read More

I would say anchor your move in a domain where your current experience is already credible. For an ad agency account manager, that often means PMM roles tied to ads products, marketing platforms, or creative workflows. It reduces the “career change tax” because you can speak the language on day one. How you could make the transition practical: Target roles where you already know the buyer. If you’ve lived the agency-client dynamic, you understand the objections, the buying committee, and what ac ...Read More

The market has tilted more hybrid again in the past few years, especially for buzzy AI-native startups that concentrate talent in the Bay Area a small handful of other cities. At Notion we are solidly an in-person hybrid company where US-based folks can work out of SF or NYC. Remote roles still exist, but they’re scarcer and usually cluster at the extremes: very early-stage teams that hire anywhere, or large companies with mature remote hiring. When it comes to realistically approaching a WFA se ...Read More

At senior IC levels, a PMM who wants to continue to grow usually means one of two things: either going deeper into a PMM-adjacent specialty, or going broader into a function that uses PMM skills as the foundation. Sounds like you are interested in the latter! The best clue for which direction to consider might be which cross-functional partners you find yourself gravitating towards the most, and what work gives you energy. In my POV there are three forks in the road for PMMs who want to switch u ...Read More
