  1. Scenario — you’ve just landed your first Product Marketing role. What ideas or projects would you try to take on and lead, and what skills do you need to make those projects as successful as possible?

    In your first product marketing role some meaningful projects would be the bill of materials for new product launches or product releases. This would include content creation along the lines of data sheets, solutions guides, battlecards, first call decks. Creating messaging and content that drives the storytelling and value proposition sets the stage for customer success and enables sellers.

  2. Why do Product Marketing positions only exist in the software development industry?

    I work in clean tech and am interested in a career in Product Marketing, but I do not know if there's a way to work as such in this industry.

    While software companies do house a preponderance of product marketers, the core capabilities and responsibilities of product marketing can be utilized across a variety of business product and services. As an example I done over 8 years of product marketing for services, both at PwC and ServiceNow. Storytelling, messaging, audience targeting, campaign strategy, value proposition and sales enablement can be applied across various industries in the B2B and B2C space.

    The Product Marketing Alliance provide great updates on what's new in product marketing and offers great resources and training. Any of the core AI tools such as Claude can provide real time feedback and the latest trends in product marketing and the market. In general, interaction with fellow product marketers and other marketers across the organization are a great resource as well.

  4. How can a digital marketer transition into product marketing?

    Many of the core competencies of product marketing overlap with digital marketing. Take the time to reframe skills such as audience segmentation and targeting, campaigns, and messaging testing to align to product marketing functions. Additionally, you will need to get closer to the product or service by talking to sales, customers, customer success, and product management.   5. Do you see community product marketing being a specialization in product marketing? If so, what is leading to that?

    I have not seen community product marketing as a specialization. While we do leverage our strong community base it is more so for customer engagement and some content. Our product management teams use the community more extensively and we encourage customer to ask questions of our experts. We have recently posted links to content and events that our customers will find valuable in their adoption of our products.

    Product Marketing requires a unique skillset of storytelling, messaging, GTM strategy, communications, sales enablement, persona analysis and to some extent event management. A key expertise for product marketers is the ability to translate technical aspects of a product or service to the language of the audience. Understanding the personas and their needs is critical to aligning capabilities and value to their challenges.
