What is the career path for a Marketing Manager with 5 years of experience transitioning into Product Marketing? What skill sets are required, and what trusted resources can aid in this transition? Additionally, will my marketing experience be considered, or will I be treated as a fresher?
In my experience, there is no clear path to product marketing. I've known amazing PMMs who have had a customer success background, some who have had a sales background, and even a few who have had a highly technical role but moved into a technical product marketing role.
With your five years of experience in marketing, you can transition into product marketing, and your experience will be considered (if not, then it probably isn't the manager/company you'd want to work for).
You should think about how your experience and the outcomes you achieved as a marketing manager align with a product marketing role. To do this, start copying PMM job descriptions and put them in one column of a spreadsheet. Write how you have achieved each requirement in the column next to it. If gaps exist, look for opportunities in your current role to fill them.
