I answered this in another question but I will reply here. Someone with a strong sales background already has a big advantage in demand gen because they understand customers, objections, and what actually moves deals forward. The key is proving you can think beyond individual deals and operate at the campaign or buying journey level. First, build some basic marketing and data fluency and understand how campaigns work, what metrics matter, and how CRM and marketing tools fit together. Second, tra ...Read More

However, if you are looking at switching across organizations, then you’d be better off by learning some of the technical skills and completing trainings/certifications which give you an understanding of the func ...Read More

I actually answered a version of this earlier in the AMA so go find it! But the one thing I'd add specifically for entry-level roles is this: don't wait for the title to start doing the work. Write publicly about what you're learning, run a small experiments, volunteer to support a demand gen team even informally, or join a demand gen community. In a world where everyone is trying to break in, a portfolio of real thinking and real attempts will always beat a resume that just says "I'm interested ...Read More

Ultimately the challenge is going to be the hard skills and translating a 1:1 customer engagement strategy to 1:many. Often times, having a long history in sales won't translate to being able to analyze for a key goal or KPI and then know how to optimize via marketing tactics. A way to get started is: 1) Hone into which field in demand gen you're interested in pursuing. It may be easier to tackle via digital marketing where there are a ton of courses out there. There likely is a technical gap so ...Read More
