Have you taken this course (productmarketingbootcamp.com)? I am looking to hone skills/knowledge in product marketing. Coming from content marketing and marketing ops, it hasn't been as easy to merge into PMM. Any other course recommendation is appreciated too!
I have not taken any specific courses related to PMM aside from some learning tracks in Reforge. Most of my experience has been from on the job learning. My advice is to lean into learning - get accredited from well established orgs (pragmatic and reforge) and look for on the job projects to gain real world experience.
I have not taken a product marketing course recently, but they can be great options that help introduce the fundamentals of the craft. The Product Marketing Alliance also offers some great material and certifications if that is an area you want to explore.
Outside of coursework, there is a ton of value in getting closer to the PMM work that may be adjacent to your current craft. PMM and crafts like Content Marketing, Content Design, and Marketing Ops work really closely together in a lot of companies and you can learn a lot by getting on the job training. Personally, I have hired several PMM's out of content related crafts. These people had a few things in common: they were high context on the product, they had existing relationships they could leverage to get up to speed quickly, and they were ready and willing to put in the cycles to learn the craft. They were basically able to reduce the amount of unknowns (the product, the people, the business) so they could focus their efforts solely on learning PMM. It can be done!
First, I love how proactive you are being as you look to expand into product marketing! I personally have not taken this course but there are so many resources including those here right on Sharebird. Product Marketing Alliance (PMA) and Pragmatic Institute offer some great courses (including free ones!). Some other ideas: you can follow PMM leaders on LinkedIn - many of them share great insights and tips, reading PMM blogs (Hubspot has some great content on the pmm function), and getting a PMM mentor.
I have not taken that course, but it does looks interesting. The good news with this community right here is that you can catch up to a lot of great conversations and interact with people in the product marketing space, so I'd take a look at past AMAs and discussion topics... you might be able to glean a lot from that vs signing up for a course.
Early in my career, I learned about product marketing through books, and career conversations. Back then, and even to this day, I catch up to the occasional product announcement, even if it's a competitor's, and study them through the lens of product marketing (how did they position it, what context did they offer, what did they want the audience to feel, understand and believe). Given product launches are often the compelling event for many product marketers, I'd take a look at some of the seminal product announcements of the past decade, and my sense is you'll get a really good feel for what great product marketing is. Steve Job's iPhone announcement from 2007, is a master-class in product marketing.
Nothing, of course, beats learning product marketing on the job. If you're currently a marketer at company that has a product marketing function, I'd try and get involved with that team and shadow them, work with them on launches and learn the trade by exposing yourself to it.
I was actually looking at the same thing and wondering myself. I've been in product marketing for 4 years. Completely self-taught and winging it. I'm hoping some seasoned PMMs answer this question very soon. Have you looked into Product Marketing Alliance? I haven't done their certificate programs but I've heard some positive things about it since they give you free tools and resources for pitch decks, battle cards etc.
