I moved into a Senior PMM role without any direct PMM experience, so I’m happy to share some things I learned along the way. The key is to leverage your existing skills, build relevant experience where you are, and make your interest known internally. Try to move into PMM within your current company. It’s so much easier when you already have a reputation for being smart, reliable, and great to work with. PMM leaders are more likely to take a chance on someone they know and trust because it feels ...Read More

The Why: PMM is notoriously hard to break into and the question sets up the catch 22–but here's the secret: PMMs are made, not born and all of the core skills can be required through other roles.  How to build them: Volunteer for PMM-adjacent projects: Even in non-PMM roles, volunteer for competitive analysis, messaging and positioning, launch support, or customer research initiatives. From my own experience breaking into PMM after years in SEO: I’ve done this switch myself a few years ago (from SEO to PMM at HubSpot), and I love being a Product Marketer. What worked for me was an internal transition strategy: keep performing at the current role, build PMM skills and connections on the side, and make my readiness visible. Context: A few years ago, I realized I missed being a Product Marketer and being close to product launches and GTM strategies. Back in the day, I used to do ...Read More

If you’ve done work similar to PMM: Showcase it clearly. Create a “Product Marketing Experience” section on your resume with bullet points like: Messaging: Developed positioning for X product launch Sales Enablement: Built battlecards and training for Y team Market Insights: Led customer interviews and synthesized feedback Bold the keywords to make it pop. Include the company you did it for (still include the "role" you had at the company in the following "Work Experience" section) If you have n ...Read More
