One of the MOST critical parts of onboarding (honestly for any employee, new to the company or even internal promotion) is establishing relationships quickly. When I bring on a new hire, one the the main sections of their onboarding plan is booking 1:1 time with people to do an informal meet & greet in the first 30-60 days. I prepare a list of key partners they’ll work with more frequently (like product, marketing, and sales partners) plus peripheral partners they may work with less frequent ...Read More

This is a great question, and definitely one that anyone new to an organization should consider. But first of all, your stakeholders are busy. When you join an organization, you have a short period of time to get to know everybody and hit the ground running. You can connect with stakeholders by going on a listening tour, asking for anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes of their time to essentially interview them. Your goal should be to understand what is their perspective on business, the top opportuni ...Read More

Being a newcomer is a great opportunity to ask questions and understand how things work or have worked in the past. Start with a series of 1:1s with key stakeholders across product, marketing and sales functions. Approach each one with a sense of friendly curiosity and openness so you can both build good rapport as well as understand with whom and how to engage. Map out key stakeholders across product, marketing and sales that are key to successful product marketing Set up a series of 1:1s to in ...Read More

This is a solid question. I also says that being a Product Marketer is a bit like being a quarterback. Or if you prefer the Arts, a band Director (fun fact, I played Tenor Sax within my high-school's concert band back in the day). What's key is the ability to understand the other critical roles, how they ARE working together, and how they SHOULD be - then orchestrating the strategy. As a new comer the first three people that you should reach out to your Growth Marketing Leader, Product Marketing ...Read More

Starting a new job is always challenging, but it can also be one of the most exciting challenges. You have the energy, you have a fresh perspective, you have an opportunity to do things differently. When I start in a new role, I like to first identify who my stakeholders are going to be. Leverage your manager and teammates to make sure you know who should be on that list. And I like to go with a simple agenda to these meetings: What's working well? What's not working as well as it should? What's ...Read More

If you just started at a new company, there are a few simple things you can do: Ask your marketing or product marketing co-workers for the names of key stakeholders in sales, product, marketing, customer success, and other departments that PMM works with (varies by company). Reach out to the head of each of these groups and schedule a short 1:1 intro call. During the intro calls with these stakeholders, ask them who else they recommend you talk to. Make a note to fup with them and schedule addit ...Read More

My interpretation of this question is that it’s about how you build relationships with the right stakeholders and establish operating mechanisms to socialize, align on, and execute on PMM strategies.  As a newcomer, the best way to connect with stakeholders around product marketing strategy is to start with a clear map of who your stakeholders are. For most PMMs, that means product, sales and other customer-facing teams (like customer success and support), and the broader marketing org. From the ...Read More

As a new comer, it's important to demonstrate value as quickly as possible and to do it with minimal direction. When joining new companies or new teams, I've found that the best way to do this is the following: Identify key stakeholders and partners you want to align with and set up 1:1s to get to know them, what they're working on and how you can best partner and support with them. Continue to build ongoing relationships with these people through recurring 1:1s as needed. Build deep understandi ...Read More

Lots of stakeholders you need to interact with will have different perceptions of what product marketing is, and how you specifically can help. I think the most important things I've learned over the years is 1) Don't assume anyone knows your role in positioning, messaging, launches, enablement, content, etc. Many people at the company may already be doing parts of these things, and your first job is to help them, while also introducing other things they could be thinking about. 2) You're not en ...Read More
